Renton is 11 miles southeast of downtown Seattle. It sits along the shore of Lake Washington. Renton, along with a few other cities in the Sound Region, use an independent street grid system. Roads names beginning with sectional divisions follow a latitudinal direction, while roads names ending in a sectional direction follow a longitudinal direction. To the north of the city is a town called Newcastle and three major freeways roadways pass through - I-5, I-405, and SR 167. Renton originally drew settlers due to its coal mines, it was incorporated as a city in 1901 and at the time coal and timber industry were extremely important. The area saw a large increase in population during World War II when Boeing built a factory to produce the B-29. Renton today has a well-known library. It was designed by Johnston-Campanella & Co. in 1964 and was annexed into the King County Library system in 2010. Renton also proudly hosts the Seattle Seahawks and their official training facilities.
