Tacoma became official with its incorporation in 1875. Population growth was aided by its selection as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Today Tacoma is a mid-sized city that serves as the county seat of Pierce County. It is located Puget Sound, is 32 miles from of Seattle, 31 miles from the state capital Olympia, and 58 miles northwest of the Mount Rainier National Park. It has many residential areas, but also serves as the center of business activity for the South Sound region. Tacoma’s nickname is the "City of Destiny" – taken from the fact that it was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The city has many access point and has multiple highways passing through, including I-5, I-705, SR 7, SR 16, SR 163, and SR 509. Tacoma is also served by public transportation that includes buses, commuter rail, light rail, and ferries.
